The following steps will improve your preparation for PMP® certification, by giving you the fundamental skills you need.

Step - 1
Buy a PMP®book, if you don't have it. Read the book with attention and while reading the book, you can follow the next steps.

Step - 2
Understand the basic terms of project management. The terms are:

This is the minimal set of terms that you need to understand before you can start reading about Process Groups and Knowledge Areas.

Step - 3
Understand the key terms of the Process Groups and Knowledge Areas. For the PMP® Exam, you have to know many high-level ordered lists and definitions. The high-level ordered lists are:

  • Five process groups
  • Nine knowledge areas
  • 44 component processes

In the discipline of project management, like most other disciplines, the term high-level means lacking details or not referring to details. So we recommend that you to start your hard work by learning the high-level material, including the definitions. First, however, focus your efforts on memorizing the lists in order. Then, later, you can dive into the definitions.

Step - 4
Make a cheat sheet of all the important abbreviations and memorize them. A few examples are listed below:

CPI (Cost Performance Index),
CV (Cost Variance),
AC (Actual Cost),
BAC (Budget At Completion),
PMO (Program Management office),
WBS (Work Breakdown Structure,
EV (Earned Value), etc.

Step - 5
Make a cheat sheet for important formulae with the variables and memorize them. A few examples are listed below:

EV (Earned Value) = BAC*(Worked completed/Total work required).
CPI (Cost Performance Index) = EV/ AC.

Step - 6
You need to know the definitions of key terms. Some are listed below:

Click here for more Definition of Key Terms

Step - 7
You need to read the PMBOK® Guide thoroughly at least one time.
